10.Feb.07 book of month : Pumpkin soup

HELEN COOPER was born in London in 1963. After qualifying as a music teacher, she became interested in children’s book illustration and used the library to teach herself about art.
Her first book, Kit and the Magic Kite, was published by Hamish Hamilton in 1987. Her work has been translated into 15 languages. Among these are The Bear Under The Stairs, winner of the Smarties Young Judges Prize, and The Baby Who Wouldn't Go to Bed, and Pumpkin Soup which both won the Kate Greenaway award.
She lives in Oxford with her husband Ted Dewan, and their daughter Pandora.

This is a story about friendship and sharing. Three friends, Cat, Squirrel and Duck do the same things each day like making pumpkin soup. Everyone has his own job to do, everyone is happy or so it seems. Like all good friends these three argue about who does what and why. After a falling out Duck leaves the little white cabin and gives his friends time to think. They worry that Duck has found nicer friends and is not coming back. Instead Duck returns, all three swap around their chores and order is restored again, at least for the time being. A clever funny story is made all the more interesting by striking pictures. The story will resonate for any child who has known the difficulties that come with friendship.

06.Nov Book of month: Anansi The Spider

Anansi the Spider is a wise, funny, mischievous, and loveable folk hero who pops up in traditional Ashanti tales from Ghana, in West Africa. This story, retold and illustrated by Gerald McDermott, relates the tale of father Anansi and his six spider sons. When Anansi sets out on a dangerous journey and gets into all sorts of trouble, each son does one thing to help, and all their efforts together save their father. He finds a mysterious, beautiful globe of light in the forest, and decides to make it a gift of thanks. But which son should receive the prize? Even with the help of Nyame, the God of All Things, he can't decide, so Nyame takes the great globe up into the sky, and that's where it has stayed ever since--the moon, for all to see. This profound story reaches children of many ages; younger ones see it as an exciting rescue story, but older children are intrigued by the larger themes of cooperation and "the whole being more than its parts."

As the winter is getting closer, we will arrange a story-telling time every weekend. It is really difficult to choose a particular time in the weekend which is convenient for all the parents/children here. For the greatest benefit of our children, we still need to decide when to put it to suit most of the people. Can we have your opinion which time, i.e., Saturday morning or Sunday afternoon, you favor. We would be very grateful to have your reply.

Renovation of Goodenough Children's Library

Goodenough Children's Library needs to be changed....

At present, our Children's Library is not "Goodenough" and not fully functioning. We are hoping we can provide children a good library environment, so we decided to change our Children's Library. I am trying to rearrange everything in the Library at the moment. Then I will make a list all of things to do, and I hope everybody can lend a hand to help us.

Afterwards, we will arrange a regular time schedule included story time, book of the month and some quizes for children.

we hope that we can work together to solve all of the problems in the near future!

Any comments and suggestions are more than welcome.
